Spinning Ice

Olivia was spinning ice in her hands. But she was not alone. In fact, a small crowd of kids had gathered around to see what the new girl's power was.

She ignored them. She ignored everything.

Slowly, gradually, the shards ice orbiting her hands grew bigger. Every time she opened her eyes, there was more of them, they were everywhere, everything was ice. It was cold, but the cold had never been much of a bother to her. When she was a baby, once she had turned the entire room to ice and snow, and it hadn't bothered her in the slightest.

The ice was swirling around her, and the little breeze made her hair flutter. Despite herself, Olivia caught herself smiling.

Let them see, she thought. Let them see my happy place.

Ashton saw a crowd of kids. He barged through to see what all of the fuss was about, and found a girl around his age surrounded by flying bits of snow and ice.

He raised an eyebrow. 'Wow.'

The girl's eyes were closed, so she didn't notice him. He cleared his throat.

Olivia opened one eye. She saw some guy her age watching her expectantly. She sighed, and let it go. The ice fell swiftly to the ground, and she even felt herself drop to the ground, like she'd been floating or something.

She huffed, "Is there a problem?"

"So... You do ice then?" His stance was relaxed. "What are you, Queen Elsa?"

She squared her jaw, and said in a voice as cold as the air around her, "No. I think you'll find that I'm not fictional."

"Don't be too sure about that," he smirked. Deep down, he knew that if he made her mad it might be the last thing he did. He hated the cold.

"How the hell did you land up with some messed-up power anyway?"

Olivia's eyes flashed pure white.

"Watch who you're calling messed up, punk," she growled.

Ashton was unfazed, even though the crowd around them started to back away, twittering nervously.

"I'll call you whatever I like."

Anger was boiling up in her, and she fought hard to keep her powers at bay.

"If you're gonna badmouth people then you'd better expect to get your butt kicked," she snarled.

He snickered, "Is that a challenge?"

He hoped that this girl couldn't hear his heartbeat start to race. He knew that she could kill him, easy.

Immediately, the shards of ice sprung back out of the ground, and spun to face the rude stranger. Olivia decided it was best not to show her doubt.

"Excuse you?"

The floating ice came ever closer, and one particularly sharp one was just about to graze his face when she dropped them again.

Ashton took multiple steps back. He looked around; the small crowd of students were gone.

He glared at her. "You can't just use your creepy powers against someone like that!"

He let the last of his would-be courage dissolve as he ran away from the scene.

Olivia glared at his back as he ran away, but was secretly scolding herself.

'Dammit, that got way too close.'
